perplexed in common with the shallow ranks

Saturday, May 22, 2010

The apartments were so irregularly disposed that the vision embraced but little more than one at a time. There was a sharp turn at every twenty or thirty yards, and at each turn a novel effect.
To the right and left, in the middle of each wall, a tall and narrow Gothic window looked out upon a closed corridor which pursued the windings of the suite.
These windows were of stained glass whose color varied in accordance with the prevailing hue of the decorations of the chamber into which it opened. That at the eastern extremity was hung, for example, in blue --and vividly blue were its windows.
The second chamber was purple in its ornaments and tapestries, and here the panes were purple.
The third was green throughout, and so were the casements.
The fourth was furnished and lighted with orange --the fifth with white --the sixth with violet.
The seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries that hung all over the ceiling and down the walls, falling in heavy folds upon a carpet of the same material and hue. But in this chamber only, the color of the windows failed to correspond with the decorations. The panes here were scarlet --a deep blood color.
Not in one of the seven apartments was there any lamp or candelabrum, amid the profusion of golden ornaments that lay scattered to and fro or depended from the roof. There was no light of any kind emanating from lamp or candle within the suite of chambers. But in the corridors that followed the suite, there stood, opposite to each window, a heavy tripod, bearing a brazier of fire that projected its rays through the tinted glass and so glaringly illumined the room. And thus were produced a multitude of gaudy and fantastic appearances.
But in the western or black chamber the effect of the fire-light that streamed upon the dark hangings through the blood-tinted panes, was ghastly in the extreme, and produced so wild a look upon the countenances of those who entered, that there were few of the company bold enough to set foot within its precincts at all.
There were delirious fancies such as the madman fashions.
There was much of the beautiful,
much of the wanton,
much of the bizarre,
something of the terrible,
and not a little of that which might have excited disgust.
To and fro in the seven chambers there stalked, in fact, a multitude of dreams.
And these --the dreams --writhed in and about, taking hue from the rooms, and causing the wild music of the orchestra to seem as the echo of their steps.
There are chords in the hearts of the most reckless which cannot be touched without emotion.
Even with the utterly lost, to whom life and death are equally jests, there are matters of which no jest can be made.
He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall.
And the flames of the tripods expired. And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.

The universe outside the skull is not different but it is not human. If science  has learned anything it is that mistakes are by orders of magnitude when lookng outward and we know already of trillions of places. The species is not alone. There are millions of other kinds of peoples out there, eight gendered, twin brained, learning their part of the universe in their own way.  Man is not a norm but he is not significant.  As usual he is one of a mass.

Digital opinion would be an expected instinctual response to counteract the influx of media reality and suggestion scaling and overwhelming each thinking unit.

He showed me a pure river of water of life clear as crystal proceeding out of the Lamb.
In the midst of the street of the river was  the tree of life which bore twelve fruits every month.  The leaves  were for  healing of the nations.
I Jesus have sent mine angel.
Thy fellow servant brethren.
I am the root and offspring of David, the bright and morning star.
I am Alpha and Omega, Beginning and  end,

He that is unjust, let him be unjust,
He which is filthy, let him be filthy.
He that is righteous, let him be righteous.
He that is holy, let him be holy.

I come quickly to give every man according to his work the right to the tree of life and  through the gates into the city.

For without are dogs, sorcerers, whoremongers, murderers, idolaters and whosoever loveth a lie.

I come quickly.
Come.
Him that heareth come.
Him that is athirst come.
Whosoever will,
Take the water of life freely.
No night there,
They need no candle nor light of the sun.

American Providence

June of 1837
My friends one and all, listen to what I have to say- Ever since I can remember, I have loved the whites. I have lived with them ever since I was a boy, and to the best of my knowledge, I have never wronged the white man, on the contrary, I have always protected them from the insults of others, which they cannot deny. The Four Bears never saw a white man hungry, but what he gave him to eat, drink, and a Buffalo skin to sleep on in time of need. I was always ready to die for them, which they cannot deny. I have done everything that a red skin could do for them, and how have they repaid it? With ingratitude! I have never called a white man a Dog, but today, I do pronounce them to be a set of black-hearted Dogs, they have deceived me, them that I always considered brother, has turned out to be my worst enemies. I have been in many battles, and often wounded, but the wounds of my enemies I exalt in, but today I am wounded, and by whom, by those same white Dogs that I have always considered, and treated as Brothers. I do not fear Death my friends. You know it, but to die with my face rotten, that even the Wolves will shrink with horror at meeting me, and say to themselves, that is the Four Bears, the friend of the Whites -listen well what I have to say, as it will be the last time you will hear me. Think of your wives, children, brothers, sisters, friends, and in fact all that you hold dear, are all dead, or dying, with their faces all rotten caused by those dogs the whites, think of all that my friends, and rise up all together and not leave one of them alive: The Four Bears will act his part.

The Mandan indian tribe also know as the "White Indians" is conjectured by many including Thomas Jefferson to have mixed with and therefore were descendants of prince Madog (Madoc) Owain of Wales who may be assumed an ancestor of the Madogs of Llanfydnach Wales.  Prince Madog ap Owain Gwynedd was a younger son of Owain Gwynedd, King of North Wales, and Queen Brenda, daughter of the Lord of Camo, it is likely that he was born at Dolwyddelan castle in the twelfth century.

According to Mandan beliefs, each person possessed four different, immortal souls. The first soul was white and often seen as a shooting star or meteor. The second soul was colored a light brown and was seen in the form of the meadowlark. The third soul, called the lodge spirit, remained at the site of the lodge after death and would remain there forever. The final soul was black and after death would travel away from the village. These final souls existed as did living people; residing in their own villages, farming and hunting.

Indians began dying at an accelerating rate—at first, two or three a day; later, entire families of eight or ten persons at once. “I Keep no a/c of the dead, as they die so fast that it is impossible.”

With blood pouring from their mouths and ears, they often died even before the appearance of smallpox’s characteristic pustules. In a futile effort to find relief, sufferers threw themselves into water and rolled in hot ashes. Husbands and wives committed MUTUAL SUICIDE, stabbing themselves with arrows and knives, or leaping off cliffs. One Mandan woman, after watching her husband die, killed her two children and “to complete the affair she hung herself.”
